THE VIEW…FROM WAY OVER HERE…
Jun 29, 2010
I have been wonderfully, pleasantly surprised by the extensive World Cup coverage we’ve been enjoying here in Canada!
I assumed much less interest in ‘the beautiful game’ but have found myself gloriously wrong…
That is a good thing because we’ve been able to get into the World Cup soccer spirit all the way over here in balmy, sunny Alberta, well, at least it’s balmy, sunny at this exact moment, five minutes from now, I can’t guarantee the weather.
But what a view we have of you wild, raucous, happy South Africans! You have caused quite a stir on the international stage and this is a moment you can be proud of. Yes, and I know the games are not done; 150 horrid, bad things can still happen to ruin it all, but hey, I’m darn proud of you all anyway!
Watching your faces, of all colors, shapes and sizes smiling together, cheering together, blowing those infernal vuvuzelas together, only brightens our day and makes us homesick for the land that stole our hearts. You are amazing people! Revel in and enjoy that to the absolute full!
All preconceived ideas about South Africa and South Africans are being soundly smashed by your joy, your unity, and your willingness to be kind to that ‘foreigner’ in the mall or at the game. Make every nay-sayer a liar, by living out loud the people that you are.
You are making our hearts swell! You are making us long for home, and as we check out our newspaper schedules for the next round of games, we gather and cheer for the best team to win.
South Africa you have our hearts and I think you have gathered many more hearts and well-wishers to you over these past glorious days of 2010 World Cup Soccer. You make us PROUD to say, ‘I may be Canadian but I am also South African!’
That’s just my view, from way over here….in Edmonton.
Cheering with you!
Lorie
