Practical Spirituality - Geoff Kirsten
Aug 06, 2010
After a couple of conversations this week it got me thinking about our role in the kingdom. Someone asked me what the difference was between practical and spiritual involvement in the church, and I’ve come to the conclusion that all we can add to what God is doing in 3Ci or in our sphere of influence is to get involved practically.
Sometimes that means replacing toilet paper in the bathrooms on a Sunday, sometimes its just chatting to that lonely guy looking for a friend, sometimes its prepping for an opportunity to share something from scripture, and sometimes its just a matter of getting over yourself and enjoying life so that those around you are encouraged. I find that sometimes I have held a tension in my life between the practical aspects of the kingdom I’m involved in now, and the things I view as more spiritual. But we are all called to be spiritual men and women with discernment, who I guess just get on with it!!
If I look at the lives of Moses, Jesus, Moody, Paul, Livingston, I see a bunch of real guys who just did what was in their hands to do. I guess anything I do that comes across as spiritual, is just my practical effort that God decides to join himself to. We can look at what God is busy with and say, what needs to be done? Some-one needs a lift? You need help with that? What can we pray for? Basically just living generous lives!
Anyway . . . just some thoughts at the end of a week.
Geoff
