Developments from Doxology.... - Steven Dollenberg

Jul 28, 2010

I was recently amazed at the response to the ‘garage’ recording of the Doxology project. I happened to open the stats to the downloads and counted over 650 downloads in the week that we put it online leading up to the recording. Added to this we gave away 200 copies – which Helen just pointed out would have gone to more than one person as we had asked that people be conservative in collecting discs – and we have quite an astounding response on our hands.

You may not think that this is anything significant, but 5 years ago when I was still working in radio, selling 1 000 copies of an international artists music was quite a decent target. Michael W. Smith, for example, would only sell around 2500 CDs per album! So to have our [rather dodgy sounding] garage recording nearly do 1 000 units is rather significant, especially since this only came as a last minute idea, with a short announcement and absolutely no advertising whatsoever beyond our immediate circles.

Now imagine what will happen when we make the final product available – which apparently is sounding awesome?! It will be made available free of charge to download and distribute. We will talk about, feature it on all of our websites, play it on radio, tell our friends, burn a copy as a cheap birthday present and many thousands of other ways, and who knows, maybe just maybe it will land in Darlene Zschech or Chris Tomlin’s hands, and the rest as they say, will be history.
