Madagascar Outreach - What a victory!

Some events in my life spark memories. Others spark a joy that seems to rise up from my gut and make me want to shout and sigh at the same time. This outreach was one of these. Wow! What a victory!

In Madagascar we are often confronted with a culture of having low expectations and not drawing attention to the individual, as the community (and sometimes a false sense of community at that) stands central to life on our island. This filters through to all of life, limiting progress and spontaneity. For me this outreach was a declaration against a restrictive cultural norm and was one of the event’s biggest victories. We went big: 7000 fliers handed out in the streets, a huge stage that even shot out fire, large decor that changed each night, home-baked eats for over 500 people every day ... drama, dance, music ...

In some cultures going big can play right into the cultural idol, here it went against it. People rose up, became involved, took initiative and a new level of excitement burst open in our church. And in all of it, the comment that was made again and again was: “We did this for God.”  This is the transforming power of the gospel in our community. Praise God!
